2025 New York Society of Addiction Medicine Medical Student, Resident, and Fellow, Associate Member Poster Competition
In order to increase the visibility of the excellent work being done by medical students, residents, addiction medicine/addiction psychiatry/medical toxicology fellows, and associate member professionals in training (physician assistants, nurse practitioners, social workers, RNs, etc.) in New York State in the area of substance use disorders, the New York Society of Addiction Medicine is hosting a competition for these professionals currently training in NYS.
Following are details about this poster competition:
Eligibility
All medical students, residents, addiction medicine/addiction psychiatry/medical toxicology fellows, and associate member professionals in a clinical training program in New York State are eligible. Entrants can participate as individuals or as part of a team.*
Submissions from primary care residency programs, such as family medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, emergency medicine, and psychiatry, are especially encouraged. However, trainees and residents from all specialties also are invited and encouraged to submit entries for this competition.

Subject
Submissions must address: How substance use disorders impact the applicant’s specialty practice, patients, and/or clinical training program.
Submissions should be in the form of presentation materials (a PowerPoint presentation) addressing such topics as: ways in which substance use disorders affect patients and/or their families; what strategies and/or innovations a medical school, residency program, fellowship program or associate member professional training program is implementing to address the needs of persons with a substance use disorder diagnoses; best practices within the specialty that target prevention of substance use disorders; other specific approaches to the care and treatment of persons with substance use disorder; research in the area of substance use disorder; or other related topics. The presentation materials submitted should include both the factual presentation on addiction, as well as material about how the medical student/s, resident/s, fellow/s or associate member professional trainees are involved or have contributed to the topics covered.
Format
Those wishing to enter the competition are asked to submit a PowerPoint presentation of up to twelve slides. Winning participants (one medical student/medical student team, one resident/resident team, one fellow/fellow team, and one associate member professional trainee/team pending presentations submitted) will be asked to give a 7-8-minute oral presentation at the 2024 Virtual NYSAM Public Policy Day (part of the Annual Conference) on Friday, February 7, 2025, using the submitted PowerPoint presentation. At the end of each presentation at the NYSAM Public Policy Day, there will be a brief Q&A with conference attendees.
Awards
Four winning presentations will be selected based on the initial submission. Each awardee (whether an individual or a team submission) will receive a $250 award.
Deadline
All presentation materials must be submitted via e-mail to kellysramsey@yahoo.com by close of business on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. Winners will be notified, via email, by Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
