Addiction Medicine is a medical subspecialty concerned with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of persons with the disease of addiction.

National Addiction Medicine Resources

American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)
ASAM is a professional medical society dedicated to increasing access and improving the quality of addiction treatment, educating physicians and the public, supporting research and prevention, and promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients with addiction.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
NIAAA is the agency within the National Institute of Health (NIH) whose mission is to support and promote science-based research on the causes, consequences and treatment of alcohol use disorder.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
NIDA is the agency within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) whose primary mission is to support and promote science-based research on the causes, consequences, and treatment of drug use and addiction.

Provider’s Clinical Support System (PCSS)
PCSS is a program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) created in response to the opioid overdose epidemic to train primary care providers in the evidence-based prevention and treatment of opioid use disorders and treatment of chronic pain. PCSS is made up of a coalition, led by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP), of major healthcare organizations all dedicated to addressing this healthcare crisis. Through a variety of trainings and a clinical coaching program, PCSS’s mission is to increase healthcare providers’ knowledge and skills in the prevention, identification, and treatment of substance use disorders with a focus on opioid use disorders.

ASAM CME Events

The Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction (AMERSA)
AMERSA is a non-profit professional organization whose mission is to improve health and well-being through interdisciplinary leadership in substance use education, research, clinical care, and policy.

The College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD)
CPDD is an organization dedicated to advancing a scientific approach to substance use and addictive disorders.

PCSS CME Training

Journals & Publications

Journal of Addiction Medicine (JAM)
JAM is the official peer-reviewed journal of ASAM. Its mission is to promote excellence in the practice of addiction medicine and in clinical research as well as to support Addiction Medicine as a mainstream medical sub-specialty.

Substance Abuse Journal
Substance Abuse journal is a peer-reviewed journal that serves as the official publication of Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse (AMERSA) in association with The International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) and the International Coalition for Addiction Studies in Education (INCASE).
