The New York Society of Addiction Medicine is hosting a competition for medical students, residents, addiction medicine/addiction psychiatry/medical toxicology fellows, and associated member professionals currently in training in New York State to increase the visibility of the excellent work being done by local trainees in the realm of substance use and substance use disorders.
Following are details about this poster competition:
Eligibility
- The following current trainees located in New York State are invited to apply:
- Medical students
- Medical residents
- Addiction medicine/addiction psychiatry/medical toxicology fellows
- Associate member professionals training as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, clinical psychologists, doctor of pharmacy, etc (see full listing of eligible associated professions on ASAM Associate Membership website)
- Entrants can participate as individuals or as part of a team (only one award per team will be given).
- Submissions from medical residents training in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, medicine/pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, and psychiatry are especially encouraged. Trainees and residents from all specialties are invited and encouraged to submit entries.
Subject & Format
- Submissions should address the interface of substance use disorders and the applicants’ specialty practice, patients, and/or clinical training program. Topics include:
- Clinical care or education innovations or strategies to address needs of people with substance use disorders being implemented at the medical school, residency program, fellowship program or associate member professional training program
- Impact of substance use disorders on patients and/or their families who may be cared for by the specialty
- Best practices within the specialty that target prevention of substance use disorders
- Other specific approaches to the care and treatment of persons with substance use disorders; relevant research; or other related topics.
- Submissions should include a Power Point presentation of up to twelve slides that include relevant background, as well as a description of how the medical student, resident, fellow or associate member professional trainees are involved or have contributed to the topics covered.
Selection & Presentation Process
Four winning presentations (up to one medical student/medical student team, one resident/resident team, one fellow/fellow team, and one associate member professional trainee/team pending presentations submitted) will be selected based on the initial submission.
Winning participants will be asked to give a 7-8 minute oral presentation at the 2024 Virtual NYSAM Public Policy Day (part of the Annual Conference) on Friday, February 2, 2024, using the submitted PowerPoint presentation.
At the end of each presentation at the NYSAM Public Policy Day, there will be a brief Q&A with conference attendees.
Awards
Four winning presentations will be selected based on the initial submission. Each awardee (whether an individual or a team submission) will receive a $250 award.
